About Us
Founded in 1978 by The Self Family, Greenwood Communities and Resorts has steadily, smartly, and impressively built a family of resort, residential and commercial communities in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida.
Our Story
The Self family first ventured into development in the 1960s, when the late James C. Self Jr. helped build Sea Pines’ first golf course, the Ocean Course. In 1978, the family started the development company, then called Greenwood Development. We would later acquire
Palmetto Dunes
Oceanfront Resort
and the land that would become Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina. In addition, to our ventures on Hilton Head Island, we have planned, developed and managed residential and commercial projects such as
The Reserve on Lake Keowee
in Sunset, South Carolina; Big Canoe in the North Georgia mountains and The Greenwood Building, a commercial office building in picturesque
Uptown Greenwood,
South Carolina.
Keeping Our Promises
Years of experience give us many advantages, but the greatest of those has been the opportunity to develop a long track record of keeping our word. What we promise, we deliver. What we set out to do, we put every ounce of our effort into doing. We lay out our values clearly–and we stick to them. Put simply, we always strive to do the right thing. For our customers, for the land, for our communities and resorts, for our neighbors, and for our company.
Our Values in Practice
When all is said and done, our business is:
- Creating gracious, contemporary living and working environments that enrich and renew the lives of our clients, our owners and our guests. Environments that are as unique as the people that enjoy them.
- Purposely designing our properties to take the best possible advantage of the area’s natural beauty while steadfastly incorporating the principles of intelligent, sustainable land planning.
- Ensuring that each Greenwood property reflects a sense of pride and individuality, providing a foundation for clients, owners and guests to flourish in their very own way.
